How You Can Change the World

Thumbnail image for KLA.jpg

There are voices from all around us vying for our attention and calling out for our help. On your twitter feed you may be following a handful of non-profits, charities, and/or NGO's and you probably see things like "join us," "help us," or "donate now." You may be following a couple social justice blogs, or frequently check out Reuters for the latest earth shattering event.

To some of you, this may fuel you to drop everything, join the peace corp and save the world. But for most of us, we can become disheartened and overwhelmed with the many needs facing our nation, like tornado victims, and our world, like extreme poverty, hunger, and disease. How can we make a difference in the face of disasters? How can one person make a dent in the HIV/AIDS crisis? How can YOU change the world?

We all have our talents, strengths, and resources. We all have our passions and presumably we all feel the responsibility of helping our neighbor in need. But how can you meld those things together? This is our challenge today. How can we mix work with calling?

There are many of us out there stuck in situations where we feel like our creativity is stifled and our lives are too busy to take on projects like building a house for people in your city, or traveling abroad to build an orphanage. We may have these grand ideas of helping our friends in need, but are plagued by the fact that we don't work for a non-profit!

One way to change your circumstances is to ask yourself three questions:

  1. Who do I know? Think about your potential audience of followers (twitter, facebook, blog, church group, classmates, etc.) How can these people help you raise support and awareness for an issue?
  2. What do I love? What are you passionate about? What are you good at? Be it baking or biking, we all have talents, and we can use these talents in a way to raise support and awareness.
  3. How will I act? Knowing about the issues facing our global society, will you choose to act in a way that helps, or will you choose to go about your daily life?

Know, Love, Act. Our lives are filled with school, sports, lessons, and work, but we can still overcome these obstacles and choose working towards something bigger than ourselves. Just because you don't work for a non-profit, you can still change the world!
