The Drilling Process

JULY_06_2011_FINAL.jpgDrilling a new well might seem as easy as drilling a hole in the ground until you hit water. But, the process is a little more hands on when the rubber meets the road as the drillers work to find a the best depth for a well to produce enough water that is safe from future contamination. Hand tools, like the well log pictured above, are used record the soil layers as the drilling is being done by a drill rig.

In a well log, samples of soil are taken at regular intervals (in this log, each meter) throughout the drilling. Analyzing these samples helps drillers to best determine the depths for the bottom of the well and the well screens (which let water into the well and keep sediment out). This is such a simple tool, but it is so critical in the drilling of a successful well.
