Update from Africa - Marsabit, Kenya
Over the past few years in the Marsabit District of Kenya, Blood:Water has been focusing on building rain tanks with our partners to capture the limited rain that falls in the desert. Because of the drought in Eastern Africa, the Marsabit Distirct has had to import water in through the Kenyan Government. The rain tanks that were previously installed have now been put to new use. Read more in the update below from our partners in Marsabit:
During this time of drought, the Government of Kenya and other stakeholders have been conducting water trucking/tanking as a short-term intervention to water shortage. The District steering committee in Marsabit identified most of the [rain] tanks constructed under this program as strategic community water storage reservoirs as they were located in public places like schools, markets and hospitals. These tanks have been of great help during the exercise as they are among the storage facilities available in community. The wider communities therefore are benefitting from these tanks.
In the past three months Blood:Water has funded three rain tank repairs and the construction of two new rain tanks (similar to the one pictured above). None of this has been easy work in the desert, where fuel costs are going through the roof, and all water (even for construction) is being bought at a very high price.
