Incentivising WASH: Soccer Pt. 2
![]()
We are excited to tell you that the WASH Sports Tournament we blogged about two weeks ago in Lwala, Kenya was a grand success! The basic concept was to put together a soccer tournament that required participants to attend a WASH training to be able to play. The initial idea gained so much support in the community, it expanded to also include volleyball and netball, and for both the men and the women in the area! Our partners originally thought that because of the sports tournament, 125 people would go through a WASH training. After receiving the results from the tournament, we are happy to say that, that prediction was too low.
Some of the highlights from the tournament include that there were 15 teams signed up for the tournament covering Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Men's Volleyball, Women's Volleyball, and Women's Netball. So many people signed up for the tournament and trainings, our partners had to put on two trainings, and a total of 175 people were trained in WASH!
The positive results of the tournament are overwhelming. One result was that since 175 people played in the tournament, 175 were trained in the topics of hand washing, germs, germ pathways and blockage, pit, communal, and school latrines, as well as the concept of "clean camp". WASH is vital for community health, to limit the spread of infectious diseases.
Another productive result that came of the tournament was the way the communities banded together not only to participate in teams for the tournament, but also making the commitment to their fellow community members to improve community health. This communal participation and education will also foster leadership, peace, and teamwork in future community projects. *We would like to also give a congratulatory round of applause to the Men's Lwala A team, and the Women's Lwala B team for winning the Soccer tournaments, the Kuna team for winning Women's Netball, and the Minyenya and Lwala B teams for winning in Volleyball! **The photo above is from a similar tournament in Uganda
